As Last year’s (2005) the 5 star’s Kanye West, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A., amongst other good ones were allover chosen to be the albums of the year, most likely if not in the first place, surely on the top 20’s of 2005 best, 2006 was, however in my point of view, a poor year in terms of quality, but the least ones chosen, are the proof that the artists and bands have still a lot to give and amaze in all genres and fusions, like the new born stars in the mainstream : Artic Monkeys, CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy), The Knife, Tv on the Radio, etc, as well as the established ones like Tom Yorke of Radiohead, Sonic Youth, Beck, Red Hot Chili Peppers… Not to mention a lot more.

So, just for curiosity… I have been crawling, navigating and exploring around through many music websites, blogs, newspapers, etc, to witness which albums were voted the best of 2006… My conclusion: a diverse and wide range of choices, still there were some listed in all (or most of all) tops. I haven’t heard some of these in full to fulfill my joys or to share a concrete and conscious opinion, so I can’t list and share my concrete critical opinion but just a personal taste + statistics to make my humble top 10 alive without any criticism or hype associated… and with no special order.

Here they go:

Ryan Larkin (born July 31, 1943 in Montreal) is a Canadian animator who rose to fame with the psychedelic 1969 Oscar-nominated short Walking and successive follow up, Street Musique (1972). He contributed art work and animation effects to the 1974 feature film Running Time, directed by Mort Ransen, in which Ryan also played three bit parts. Prior to Walking, he had made two other short animated films (Cityscape and Syrinx) and had worked on various public works projects developed at the National Film Board of Canada. His own films won many international awards including an Oscar nomination in 1967.

He attended the Art School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Museum of Fine Art) before working at the National Film Board of Canada from the early 1960s until 1978.

In his early life, Ryan’s father was abusive to the whole family, probably because of his alcoholism. This in turn led to Ryan being quite shy, which was worsened by the death of his older brother.

The Castellón County Council (Spain) is delighted to announce that the winner of the III International Painting Prize is Carlos Bunga from Portugal with the work Untitled (2006), 250×350cm, a site-specific installation with pressed cardboard, wrapping tape, and paint.

Our friend Carlos Bunga just won 60.000 fucking €uros ! I dunno if it’s really a “painting” work … but damn… Congrats?

Today they posted an excellent feature about the worst album covers of 2006.

artbeat.jpg

ArtBeat, a Red Bull project, is an international innovation platform for young, non-museal art, that is ’street art’, and the beats that go with it. The second edition of ArtBeat, which took place during the Amsterdam Museum Night on saturday november 4, 2006, drew over 3000 young urban street art lovers to BG and 11 in the culturally vibrant Post CS building. All this while ArtBeat, Red Bull’s annual international street art happening, is not even an official part of the Museum Night, in style with the discipline this event is dedicated to.

In spite the fact that since it’s pilot edition last year ArtBeat got the reputation to be the afterparty of the Museum Night, -because of the cutting edge international Beat-programming of DJ’s and live acts-, for the real street art lover the party starts way earlier in the evening.
