Freedom Wig is a “one-a-day” painting site by Martha Rich.
Welcome to Freedomwig, my one-painting-a-day website. Freedomwig is the name of a real wig. I named the site after a wig because wigs can either make you feel like someone else or make you feel normal. The art on this site is like that.
I make one painting or drawing every day. This was started on November 1, 2006 and will go for at least 1 year. I may miss uploading the art when I travel, but I’ll upload it when I get back.
Freedomwig is geared to promote art collecting. There is so much sameness in the world and art collecting allows you to have something one-of-a-kind and meaningful to you. Since collecting art can be intimidating, this site offers affordable small pieces.

THE KITCHEN is an art proposal included (among other artists) on the curatorial project Trabalhar Cansa.
The Trabalhar Cansa inaugurated/opened this March in the gallery artecontempo in Lisbon.
The proposal KITCHEN integrates a main project called HOUSE, which belongs to a fictional portfolio.
The HOUSE project is a simulation of a curatorial proposal where the artists and works selection are first based in their functional potential for the construction of a living space.
The action consists of building an interior of a habitation space with art object replicas (which are mainly part of the institutional circuit), in a way to be inhabited by the collective during a pre-established period, materializing the objects and giving them a real use.
Pizz Buin is a Portuguese art collective composed by de fine artists Rosa Baptista, Vanda Madureira, Irene Loureiro and Sara Santos. Pizz Buin was created in 2005.
As a collective, they create interferences/noises in modos operandos, demystifying the media powers in art, slicing formats, vices, know how’s and creating a reflection base over the interfaces that feed the art market.

This Exhibition brings together thirteen contemporary artists whose works offer a rich amount of the interplay between abstraction and comic models of representation. From Sunday newspaper “funnies” to Walt Disney’s cartoon shorts, the appropriation of comics by artists has offered a bridge between the lowbrow “stuff” that populate visual culture and rarified brands of fine art. Julian Montague presents The Stray Shopping Cart Project.
Over the last several decades, the stray shopping cart has quietly become an integral part of the urban and suburban landscapes of the industrialized world. To the average person, the stray shopping cart is most often thought of as a signifier of urban blight or as an indicator of a consumer society gone too far. Unfortunately, the acceptance of these oversimplified designations has discouraged any serious examination of the stray shopping cart phenomenon.
Until now, the major obstacle that has prevented people from thinking critically about stray shopping carts has been that we have not had any formalized language to differentiate one shopping cart from another.
Besides making good graphic design, Julian also has this interesting project consisting in insect drawings, amongst other stuff.
Charity by Numbers, a huge philanthropic effort co-curated by gallerists Jan Corey and Bruce Helford and artist Gary Baseman. The opening reception was Saturday, February 10th at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. More than 65 established and emerging art stars transformed vintage, hand-painted paint-by-numbers into modern masterpieces. The results are being auctioned via eBay until February 17th to raise money for the kids. 100% of the proceeds go to The Alliance For Children’s Rights. Via Juxtapoz; see also photos of the event.

Arte Contemporaneo - ARCO - 26th Contemporary Art Fair Guest Country: Korea
Madrid, 15th-19th February 2007
Arte Contemporaneo - ARCO

After commemorating its 25th anniversary in February 2006, the International Contemporary Art Fair of Madrid, ARCO, has consolidated its position as one of the world’s leading events for contemporary visual arts. Its international prestige, together with Madrid’s cultural appeal, turn the fair into an annual focus of attention for galleries, artists, art critics, curators, museum managers, experts and art experts worldwide. A large market platform with a repercussion borne out by the many sales it generates, as well as other figures registered: 200,000 visitors, 3000 accredited journalists, and over 4000 press clippings.
In 2007, ARCO begins a new phase, with a project combining continuity with the necessary innovation to face the demands of the contemporary art scene. A project inheriting an excellent reputation, and an enviable starting point from which to take on the new challenges opposed by the art market, and to responds to issues like the growth of collecting in Spain, the consolidation of ARCO as a marketplace, and the increasing competitiveness of international art fairs.

Tommy has been in the advertising industry for the last 25 years, but secretly has been drawing and painting during his free-time. He has decided to put together these works online giving more emphasis to what (I believe) he loves more to do : Sketchbooks, Illustrations, paintings and drawings. You can also have a sneak into his print ads and commercials, also really dope. I’ve seen those photo treated girl-dolls before…

Painter and installation artist Tomokazu Matsuyama, just 30, has already lived through more years of cultural confusion than most of us will ever see. The oft-transplanted Matsuyama, now in New York, makes the accidental multiculturalism that doesn’t show on his face the primary subject of all of his work. “When I considered what is uniquely mine,” explains the artist, “I realized I wanted to take everything I was raised with and mix it all up and make something completely new.”
In keeping with his global upbringing, Matsuyama exhibits his contemporary art around the world, in addition to working with multinationals like Levi’s and Nike to bring them into line with “the now, today, in all of its cultural complexity.” He strives to portray this global melee through a conscious “appropriation” of all of his influences: cultural, artistic, and personal. Matsuyama’s unconflicted and positively ebullient works do not ask, “What am I?,” but assert, “I am everybody.”

One of the leading figurative painters of his generation, Currin’s influences range from Italian and Northern Renaissance paintings to popular illustrations from the mid-20th century. Whether portraits of older women, buxom girls, nudes with elongated bodies, or group scenes of domestic life, his works are characterized by baroque gestures, loose brush strokes, unorthodox palettes, and detailed backgrounds that startle the viewer into a reconsideration of the tradition of painting. His “old master” techniques and individual style have earned him accolades from critics and collectors worldwide.

What really makes Currin’s work interesting—and hard to dismiss—is the compelling weirdness of his imagery. He draws on an eclectic range of sources, both high and low, from ’60s girlie magazines like Modern Man to Tiepolo, Cranach, and Courbet. If you know your art history, it’s a lot of fun to parse the references. In his review of the Whitney show, for example, Kimmelman points out that while Nude on a Table immediately brings to mind Mantegna’s famous Dead Christ, the actual source is a more obscure painting of the same subject by Annibale Carracci. This art-historical guessing game may not add up to much in the end, but as Schjeldahl says in his review, “It is pleasant to know things.”
