The Illustrations of Noma Bar (amazon) : Mark Batty Publishers Via CR

Israeli illustrator Noma Bar depicts the faces of the famous using only a few lines, colours and drawn objects. But the key to the success of the London-based artist’s work is how the objects he assembles to create each face immediately relate to the particular person in question: evoking their personality, reputation or, even, their ideology.

Pablo Lobato

Pablo started drawing when he was just a little boy. First, it was superheroes and medieval knights. Then, he moved onto comic strips such as Asterix and Mafalda, and by age 12, he drew his first caricature of his soccer coach. That drawing was so well-received, Pablo began illustrating teachers, classmates, and celebrities. And so when it came time for Pablo to pick a career, it was no great surprise that he decided to study Graphic Design. Soon after finishing his studies, Pablo started working as a graphic designer for different magazines. This, however, only lasted five years, since total boredom drove him back to his first passion – illustrations. Today, Pablo has made quite a name for him self in Argentina where he lives and works.

Edwin Fotheringham Illustration

Edwin Fotheringham spent his formative years in Sydney, Australia, and was educated at the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle, where he lives today with his family.

In 1992, after giving up on the idea of being a fine artist and stockboy, Edwin met with the eminent graphic artist Art Chantry for a portfolio review. With the response, “don’t quit your day job,” the gauntlet was thrown down. Never one to back away from a challenge, Mr. Fotheringham was born.

It was a golden moment in Seattle’s history: the nation’s psyche was focused on some grubby music types and all that they touched. Mr. Fotheringham was lucky enough to have been touched, and seized the opportunity; a trip to New York yielded incredible results, and that was that.

With work that has addressed subjects and markets as varied as punk rock and Neiman Marcus, The New Yorker and Ladies Home Journal, a Visa Card campaign and an elementary school auction, Mr. Fotheringham continues to enjoy solving visual problems with blotty lines.

Stina Persson has lived, studied and worked in Tokyo, New York, Florence and Lund, Sweden, where she was born. She says her illustration style is basically about “finding the right balance between the edgy and the elegant the raw and the beautiful.” To achieve this, she uses ink, watercolor and gouache, as well as Mexican cut paper (used at ceremonies and festivals).

UCLA Biomedical Library History & Special Collections: The John C. Liebeskind History of Pain Collection

The Antikamnia (”Opposed to Pain”) Chemical Company of St. Louis, Missouri produced several calendars (1897-1901) illustrated with “Skeleton Sketches”–chromolithographed series based on watercolors by the local physician-artist Louis Crucius. The limited edition calendars were mailed to physicians who provided business cards or letterhead correspondence as evidence of their medical standing. Antikamnia was a proprietary product consisting of acetanalid (antifebrin) combined with sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and caffeine.

Via bibliodyssey

The Liebeskind Collection recently acquired copies of the English- and French-language calendars for 1900, which matches 2007’s calendar day-for-day.

Downloadable copies of the 1900 calendars are also available.

Freedom Wig is a “one-a-day” painting site by Martha Rich.

Welcome to Freedomwig, my one-painting-a-day website. Freedomwig is the name of a real wig. I named the site after a wig because wigs can either make you feel like someone else or make you feel normal. The art on this site is like that.

I make one painting or drawing every day. This was started on November 1, 2006 and will go for at least 1 year. I may miss uploading the art when I travel, but I’ll upload it when I get back.

Freedomwig is geared to promote art collecting. There is so much sameness in the world and art collecting allows you to have something one-of-a-kind and meaningful to you. Since collecting art can be intimidating, this site offers affordable small pieces.

Gary Taxali was born in Chandigarh, India in 1968. A year later, he and his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada. The encouragement of his parents led Gary to take art classes as a child which eventually led him to pursue an art education. In 1991, he graduated from the Ontario College of Art and immediately began working as a professional illustrator. A few years later, he began showing in various exhibitions and galleries throughout North America including the Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles. In 2005, he launched his first vinyl toy, The Toy Monkey, which includes a special edition specifically created for The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Gary was also asked by the Whitney Museum to donate a limited edition print to be given to top donors at their annual fundraising Art Party. Aside from his gallery shows and illustration work, Gary also devotes a portion of his time traveling through lecturing and teaching at various arts organizations and schools such as The Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada. He is a Founding Member of IPA (The Illustrators’ Partnership of America) and sits on the Advisory Board of 3×3: The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration. Currently, Gary is working on his first children’s book, ‘This is Silly’ and a solo show this September at Magic Pony in Toronto. This May, at the invitation of Henrik Drescher, Gary will be conducting a lecture/workshop at The Danish Design School in Copenhagen, Denmark.
