Fitacola collages
Fitacola is a handmade collage project by Graça Santos and Carlos Quitério.
We are a duo of collage artists who love cut paper collage, the mixing and taping of old and new references, creating new ideas and concepts from all kinds of images, magazines, books and papers in general. We put it all together with adhesive tape (Fitacola in Portuguese), thus the name. Our work supplies come, mostly, from flee-markets, second hand stores and old magazines and papers-
We love playing with all these images, icons, visual noise and information we all come to acquire during our lives and we love to make sense out of these random pieces of paper put together, playing with our global, national or even local common memories.
Aside from our commissioned works, we don’t plan our collage works as illustrations, we just start cutting and combining until we are pleased with the result.
Creating something completely different and yet being able to make it unique, always with a distinct meaning every time someone else looks at it, it’s motivating and rewarding.
